Solar Panel Project on Campus in Costa Rica
On 21 July 2026, the University of Costa Rica (UCR) began installing 1,872 solar panels as part of the SER Solar Programme, developed in partnership with the National Power and Light Company (CNFL). The project will provide renewable energy to several campus buildings, including the Faculty of Engineering, which will operate entirely on renewable electricity. With an installed capacity of 1.16 MWp, the initiative will reduce reliance on conventional energy sources, lower electricity costs, and strengthen the university's role as a living laboratory for sustainability and climate action. It forms part of a 20-year collaboration between UCR and CNFL to advance Costa Rica's energy transition.
Commenting on the launch of the installation, UCR Rector Carlos Araya Leandro emphasized that the project demonstrates the University's commitment to sustainability through concrete action: “With this step, we are turning our commitment to environmental sustainability and the responsible use of resources into tangible actions. Our responsibility to the common good drives us to place the University’s knowledge and expertise at the service of the country.â€
